Fire-resistant cables are of recent interest to building, industrial plant equipment, transportation facility, and electrical facility safety. They perform one sole task, i.e., delivering uninterrupted continuity of life-sustaining circuits in the event of a fire so that people get a few minutes’ time to get out safely and miss even greater hazards.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced an ambitious plan to modernize the country’s air traffic control system, which in some cases still relies on technology from the 1970s, 1980s and even 1990s, including computers running Windows 95 and floppy disks.
The need for modernization:
The need for an upgrade is urgent, as the existing system is showing signs of aging and has led to flight delays and cancellations, as recently happened at Newark Liberty #International #Airport . Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau said: “The whole idea is to replace the system. No more floppy disks or paper tapes.”
The FAA’s plan:
The FAA’s plan includes a number of major technology and infrastructure upgrades:
* Replace aging telecommunications: They will be replaced with fiber-optic, wireless, and satellite technologies.
* Replace radar: 618 aging radar systems will be replaced.
* Address runway safety issues: The number of airports with surface detection equipment, which alerts controllers when an aircraft is out of bounds, will increase.
* Build new air traffic control centers: Six new centers will be built and outdated facilities will be replaced.
* Install new, modern hardware and software: Across all air traffic control facilities to create a common system.
The NextGen program:
The effort to modernize is not new. The FAA has been working on the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) program for years, which aims to improve air traffic management and reduce congestion through strategic planning, management, and flight optimization. While NextGen has brought some improvements, such as fuel savings and emissions reductions, its full implementation has been significantly delayed. Originally expected to be completed by 2025, estimates now point to #2030 or later.
Challenges and Concerns:
While there is broad consensus on the need for modernization, there are also significant challenges:
* Cost: The project is expected to cost billions of dollars, with estimates ranging from tens of billions. The #FAA will seek the full amount upfront from Congress.
* Timeline: While Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has said the department aims to complete the project within four years, many industry experts consider that timeline unrealistic, given the complexity and history of delays for similar projects.
* Spare parts: The FAA has had to source spare parts from #eBay for old equipment, as they are no longer available from manufacturers.
* Resistance to change: While new technology can offer many benefits, moving away from older, tried-and-true methods (such as paper tape) can be met with resistance.
* Cybersecurity: The transition to more modern, networked systems makes security an even more critical factor.
Overall, the FAA faces a massive and critical modernization project, aiming to bring the U.S. air traffic control system into the 21st century, ensuring greater safety and efficiency. The success of the project will depend on funding, effective planning and addressing the expected challenges.
